Next Generation Science Standards

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are a set of science education standards being developed based on a vision for science education established by the Framework for K-12 Science Education published by the National Research Council in 2011. Publication of the Framework was the first of a two-step process to produce a set of Next Generation Science Standards for voluntary adoption by the states.

Important to Understand & Remember
  • the NC Board of Education will eventually adopt the NGSS; however there is a big difference between ADOPTING the standards & IMPLEMENTING the standards
  • if NC ADOPTED the NGSS tomorrow, it would still take at least 3 years to IMPLEMENT the standards and roll them out for teachers and students
  • IMPLEMENTING the standards would require NCDPI to rewrite curriculum, EOGs & common exams, provide professional development, etc.
  • it is valuable for teachers to become familiar with the standards and start to understand the disciplinary core ideas and cross-cutting concepts
